styling the bump – wardrobe for rent

If you’re anything like me you’ve watched the first Sex & the City movie a time or two (okay, more like ten or twenty)… so you’ll remember the scene in which Carrie asks Jennifer Hudson’s character Louise how a girl sharing a one bedroom with four other people can afford a Louis Vuitton Denim Patchwork Bowly bag (MSRP around $1,500). The answer of course? It’s rented! The now well-known Bag, Borrow, or Steal is giving pocketbook-conscious fashionistas the ability to rent designer bags and accessories at a fraction of the cost of owning them.

One of the biggest challenges in keeping your bump stylish throughout pregnancy is maintaining a wardrobe that grows as quickly as your belly. Although there are many methods to achieve this it’s arguably difficult to do without spending a fortune. What if you could have the maternity wardrobe of your dreams at a fraction of the cost? New start-up company Belli Ella plans to to just that by translating the Bag, Borrow, or Steal model to the world of maternity clothing.

The initial subscription plan as listed here is $50 a month for 6 pieces. You start by hand picking the items you would like to receive and then can send them back to exchange as you need new sizes or simply would like new styles. Read more about how they got the idea here on their blog!

Here’s a pitch from Matt, one of the founders of the company on Jason Calacanis’ web show “This Week in Startups”.

I think this has the potential to be a fabulous resource for mamas-to-be and I’m excited to watch Belli Ella grow. Any initial thoughts or reactions? I’d love to hear your feedback!

cloth diapering

The topic of cloth diapering has been discussed and debated for years with the outcome being: each family ultimately has to decide what’s best for them. When it comes time for us to have a little one, I’m honestly not sure what we’ll choose but I know I want to be educated about the options!

If you are contemplating cloth diapering, here are a few benefits to consider. One: they do an amazing job of keeping baby dry while avoiding diaper rash. Two: it can save thousands of dollars in the long run although a the initial investment will most likely be $200 – $300 for most of the cloth diapering systems out there. Three: it’s good for the environment! They are 100% reusable and if you plan to use them for more than one baby that’s even greater savings for both the environment and your pocketbook. Four: surprisingly easy to use (although a bit intimidating at first). Five: they are SUPER cute… not only are multiple colors available, but depending on the brand you choose – multiple patterns as well!

Okay, so now you’ve decided to go the cloth route but there are so many different brands and systems out there, how do you choose? Bum Genius seems to be an all around favorite, getting high reviews for ease of use and functionality plus aesthetics (bumGenius 4.0 pictured above, available in 8 colors).

Fuzzi Buns is another front-runner in the industry, available in a multitude of colors as pictured above. They also do a great job on their website of speaking to many of the benefits of cloth diapering and answering potential questions. Read more about it here!

Fore more info about cloth diapering, here are a few things to check out: clothdiaperreviews.com and their post on Thirsties Fab Fitted diaper. Also – Jen Lula writes about using cloth diapers for her baby and includes a very helpful overview of their daily routine here on her blog Jen Loves Kev.

One more note-worth brand for you to check out: Cutey Baby. The system they use is slightly different than the other brands mentioned today (the liners are biodegradable and disposable). In addition to great solids, they have some fabulous prints! Also available on zulily through 1/7.

nursery inspiration: orange & blue

Inspiration for this blue and orange nursery comes from a fabulous etsy shop called fingers & toes. They specialize in modern designs for baby featuring custom crib sets and sheets as well as other custom nursery accessories including changing pad covers, wall decor, and liners for storage bins. Choose from dozens of fabrics to completely customize your baby’s bedding from bumper, trim and ties to several sets of crib sheets and a multi-fabric custom crib skirt.

The darling custom crib bedding pictured below is a product of fingers & toes and was featured on Cheap & Chic Nursery as one of their 2010 real nurseries!

This artwork (vinyl giraffe wall decals & “no monsters allowed“) is a perfect addition to adorn the walls of an orange and blue nursery among others, both from etsy shops!

A few final additions to make this blue and orange nursery a cozy spot for mom, dad, and baby: 1. I LOVE this colorblock chair from anthropologie. 2. Pendant ceiling lamp from IKEA. 3. Cozy, plush sheepskin rug from west elm. 4. Fabulous Bacati orange string panel curtains from Babies R Us.

workin’ out with the bump!

We all know how important it is to feel like you’re looking your best and even more so when you’re trying to embrace an ever-changing baby bump. I’ve posted previously about pre-natal yoga, but here is something especially for the bump-sporting mamas-to-be who have a dance background or just love the kind of work out it can offer. Below is a pregnancy work out video from The Bar Method that was recommended by a girlfriend of mine who is STILL rocking this routine 8 months preggo (thanks Siobhain!!).

To find a Bar Method location in your area, click here! We’re lucky to have one just a few blocks away from me in downtown Portland but they have over 40 locations in 10 states plus Vancouver, B.C. Not to mention – they have FAB classes for the non-pregnant as well from beginner to advanced. Also – see this link for ordering the DVD to do the workout at home!
