nursery inspiration: cheerful yellow & gray

In developing this light and bright nursery, I went back to one of my favorite etsy shops, fingers & toes for some inspired custom crib bedding. Both yellow fabrics: double-sided bumper. Gray & white: crib sheets. Solid gray: pleated crib skirt.

On the walls, I picked Paper White from Benjamin Moore (a beautiful, soft gray) and on the ceiling, a vibrant mustard yellow – also from Benjamin Moore – in Sunrays. Using their Natura zero-VOC interior paint gives you a healthier paint option for you and your family.

I wanted to keep the wood tones in the room nice and warm and everything else light and bright. Artwork: elephant with crown from trafalgarssquare on etsy. Crib: sleigh fixed gate crib in Sun Valley honey from Pottery Barn Kids. Rug: gray and white zebra rug from West Elm. Lighting: medium glass ball chandelier from etsy.

More cheerful artwork for the walls and a toy that is just as cute as it is fun! Alphabet Art Print from etsy. Baby blue tricycle from Airflow Collectibles (find it on Gilt Groupe through 1/20). Mister Numbers print from etsy.

And a few finishing touches… curtains from Anthropologie. Emeline chair from Anthropologie. Handmade alphabet, number, and puzzle blocks from etsy. Inspired by vintage steamer trunks… the Traveler Chest (attach a custom changing pad to the top for a multi-purpose piece)! Okay, I might be a little obsessed with Anthropologie…

glowing at the Globes

The red carpet at the Beverly Hilton for this year’s Golden Globes was graced with not one, but at least two mamas-to-be showing off their bumps in fabulous Hollywood style! Winning for her amazing performance in Black Swan, Natalie Portman looked sweet and stylish in the gorgeous pink and red Viktor & Rolf gown; empire waist perfect for her growing belly. Also expecting and looking fabulous, 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski posed on the red carpet in a light blue Badgley Mischka one-shouldered gown showing off the bump!

A few more of my favorites from the red carpet (although not currently sporting a bump): Anne Hathaway (who will be hosting this year’s Oscar’s) looked stunning in Giorgio Armani Prive. Always true to her own unique (albeit somewhat kooky) style, ‘The Kings Speech’ star Helena Bonham Carter accessorized the Vivenne Westwood dress with mismatched shoes… and it’s just crazy enough that I kinda love it! Also amazing, Amy Adams’ navy Marchesa gown perfectly complimented by her soft hair and makeup.

Finally in my little red carpet review… these stars were certainly seeing shades of jade and I’m perfectly okay with that! Catherine Zeta-Jones as beautiful as ever in Versace. Elisabeth Moss (of Madmen) in custom Donna Karan. Angelina Jolie sparkled in this emerald green Atelier Versace. Mila Kunis, also nominated for her role in ‘Black Swan’ wore her one-shouldered Vera Wang gown beautifully.

Not surprising to see green as a stand-out color, it was all over the runways for pre-fall. So what’s the forecast for Oscar fashion? Lots of white, red and black!

bringing baby into spring

As promised, today we have a few looks and accessories for bringing baby into spring. We don’t normally feature looks for Dad, but when I saw this darling father/son look from the Chanel Spring 2011 runway show I just had to share it! Photo from style.com.

A few trends to note – though for practicality’s sake, you make not dress your little man in a white jacket, there are a few things you can take from this. Clearly denim is always a go-to, but chambray shirts continue as a trend into spring. Also – layers and more structured shirts or jackets make their appearance as well. Oh, and a little homage to The King, I think even Elvis would approve of these blue suede shoes! Staying on-trend for spring with crisp, clean lines and neutral colors I love this look for baby boy:

Stripe button up, stripe cardigan, and patchwork shorts available in stores and at gymboree.com. Sperry Top-Sider ‘Bluefish’ boat shoe from nordstrom.com.

These two sweet little dresses are perfect for baby girl this spring. The first ‘Retro Betsy Dress’ is from a darling etsy shop full of handmade dresses and seperates called Burger Belly Beans. The second, a vintage long sleeve yellow dress from Miskabelly Vintage.

More wonderful things for baby: (clockwise) Baby Aspen Snuggle Sack. Ju Ju Be ‘Be Quick’ diaper pouch wristlet. Winter Water Factory floral bodysuit and blanket. Miyim plush organic stroller toys.

Boon Fli dragonfly mobile. Navy and brown sandal by Pediped.  Chic Papoose revearsable baby sling. Jaxxwear infant bodysuit, blanket, and hat.

Baby Eggi Days of the Week onesies. Baby Aspen ‘Bunch ‘O Bloomers’.

Now that we’ve shared some cheerful springtime accessories for baby, I’d like to leave you with just a little taste of the summer to come (or perhaps just a warm destination for your mid-winter get away)! Infant girls from gymboree.com and in stores.

styling the bump – looks for spring 2011

The Christmas decorations are just recently put away and in many areas of the country we’re still getting a few snowflakes falling from time to time but in the world of fashion, the Spring shows are history and the collections are already arriving in store. That means it’s a new year, time for new looks and a perfect opportunity to start transitioning your winter wardrobe with some fabulous spring style.

Ladylike elegance of the 1950s and 60s ruled the runway for Spring 11, probably having something to do with the continued popularity of the TV show Mad Men (pictured above). This continued into a stream of 1970s themes like Marc Jacobs vibrant collection and the ‘bohemian beachcomber done luxe’ of Emilio Pucci, Jacobs especially seeming to draw on powerhouses of the era like Missoni and YSL.

Free People Sheer Maxi Slipdress ($98). Pedro Garcia ‘Ibiza’ Satin espadrille flat ($325). Free People ‘Up in the Clouds’ Tunic Sweater ($108).

Styles are clean and crisp, even minimal in some cases. Nudes and neutrals, sheer fabric and layers dominate. In shoes: wedges, ballerinas, flat sandals and lace up oxfords were shown in leathers and satins with cork and woven detailing. Bling was replaced with glittering gold. Prints are back in a big way with botanical and florals. Stripes made a statement especially on the runways of Prada and Jil Sander.

Moody Mamas Maternity Ruched Stripe Tunic ($68). Maternal America Harem Pants ($68). Pedro Garcia ‘Rainia’ woven wedge platform sandal ($395). Proenza Schouler PS1 medium linen satchel ($1485). Turquoise & gold multi-strand necklace ($118). Gold & turquoise shell necklace ($78).

Kensie Faux Fur Vest ($59.90). Stripe jersey maxi dress ($24.95 – H&M in stores). Lanvin ‘Puzzle’ peep toe wedge ($1280).

More Spring ’11 styles for mama to come later. Check back tomorrow for baby’s Spring must-haves!

nursery inspiration: vintage luxe

Inspired by the color of 2011 and the beautiful crib bedding from Bella Notte (pictured left), this sweet little nursery began to take shape. I wanted it to be very feminine, luxe and vintage yet still a calm soothing place for baby and parents. Using beautiful color throughout the room as well as rich fabrics help maintain the tone.

For the walls, I discovered some amazing paintable textured wallpaper from The Land of Nod! After applying the wallpaper, I would use Gray Horse 2140-50 from Benjamin Moore for the color. Depending on the size of your space as well as the light in the room you may want to consider doing just one or two walls gray and keep the others lighter (white or ivory). The next part is my favorite! I first read about this technique on the blog Nursery Notations. From the edge of the ceiling, measure down about 12″ and apply a trim (white for this room). The ceiling as well as everything above the trim is painted (in this case) Pantone’s Honeysuckle Pink 18-2120. Read more here and see photos of this technique used in a nursery on Nursery Notations!

What better to adorn these pretty walls than vintage Vogue? Left: Cristobal Balenciaga silk paisley dress with matching coat, photograph by Henry Clarke appeared in the March 15, 1954 issue. Center: Vintage Vogue cover for the ‘Paris Fashion’ issue April 15, 1928. Right: Cartwheel Hats, photograph by Horst P. Horst appeared May 15, 1935, Vogue.

Beautiful gray velvet curtains from anthropologie and one of my favs for a girly room – a wire mannequin for displaying all kinds of wonderful things (like hats, feather boas, long strings of pearls)! Wire mannequin from etsy – no longer available.

A few more things for this sweet little room: LERDAL chandelier from IKEA. Handmade birdie pillow from etsy shop Bellamina. Luca glider and ottoman from The Land of Nod.
