{styling the bump} modcloth

It’s no surprise that I have an on-going obsession of sorts with ModCloth – who doesn’t?! Today’s edition of ‘styling the bump’ is full of pieces direct from ModCloth that not only will work with a rapidly growing bump, but also are all somewhat reminiscent of days gone by; of steamer trunks, transatlantic crossings, and parts of the world as-yet unexplored.

Hey, Bib Tank. Don’t Steel My Skirt. Style Columnist Blazer.

Drawing Room Dress. Canary Islands Dress. Predawn Pastures Dress.

Upwardly Mobile Satchel. The Queen’s Speech Necklace. On a Wing and a Pair Flat.

{DIY} nursery artwork + baby shower project

For a unique shower activity as well as completely custom artwork, try this project! Choose wooden letters to decorate the walls of the nursery (for example: the alphabet, baby’s name, a short phrase). Next, pick paint colors that work with your nursery decor.

When it comes time for the shower, lay all the supplies out and have your guests go to town! All the letters will look great together because of the unifying paint colors you have already picked – plus – the best part is: no artistic ability needed! If a guest is shy about their creative inclinations, encourage them to simply paint their letter a solid color. It will serve as balance to finished letters with more going on.

Have everyone sign their names and/or write a message for baby on the back of their letters before they get painting. Now you have a fun shower project, custom nursery artwork, and a very sweet and personal keepsake. Happy painting!

{baby shower} all in white

An easy way to add drama to any party decor is to stick with one color; in this case, we’ve gone with all white! Not only is a shower all in white chic and dramatic, but it is also a great idea when the parents are keeping the gender of the baby a surprise. Not to mention – it’s a fabulous solution for the “I’m not the baby shower type” mama-to-be.

This adorable handmade bunting is perfect shower decor – consider customizing it with baby’s name to be used later in the nursery. Find it here on etsy.

A few other elements for a color-themed white shower: A little sweet treat – this candy bar doubles as decor and favors for your guests to take home. Keep the invites clean and simple – I love the ‘Vintage Headline’ series of invitations from tinyprints.com. For beverages, offer your guests some bubbles via Sofia Sparkling or cream soda from Jones Soda Co. with customized labels! Lastly, white food isn’t boring – tickle their tastebuds with this yummy marinated fresh goat cheese salad (recipe from Martha Stewart).

{an adoption story} from ghana with love

Yesterday I stumbled accross the Carter family’s blog, Ground Swell via Dear Baby and it so touched my heart that I had to share. In the process of adopting a little boy from Ghana, they share their dream and inspiration in a powerful way. See more of their story here.

In addition, they are raising money to support the adoption in part from the proceeds from these darling custom-made tees! To donate to their adoption fund or to purchase one of these adorable little shirts, visit their blog.

{nursery inspiration} viceroy hotel

One of my favorite boutique hotels is the Viceroy Hotel in Palm Springs, California. Since it’s origin in the 1930s, Viceroy has embodied the luxury and style signature of the desert’s original era of Hollywood glamour.

The golden era of Hollywood (of which the Viceroy is reminiscent) serves as inspiration for this week’s nursery; a room fit for a tiny starlette in the making!

The basis of this room was a lot of white, accents of yellow and black, and a healthy dose of glamour. Find the pieces to create your own little slice of vintage Hollywood here:

Curtains. Tripod Lamp. Frame. Fabric (for crib bedding). Rocker. Dresser. Sheepskin Rug. Owl Lamp. Chandelier Pillow. Crib. Lucite Tray.

See here for a fabulous tutorial on DIY crib sheets!

lines we love: cardigan by kate young

In between being named one of the top five stylists in Hollywood (clients include Natalie Portman among others), writing editorials, and consulting for the likes of Jason Wu and Derek Lam, Kate Young has somehow managed to find time to add the title of ‘designer’ to her resume. Partnering with knitwear designer Lynne Hiriak of Cardigan, Young created a luxurious line of knits for mom and baby.

For adults, she modified a Cardigan favorite for a cropped, loose fit (pictured above) and drawstring sweatpants with an elastic cuff (inspired by runway favorites like Dries Van Noten and Isabel Marant). For the babes, her pieces include a buttoned onesie (pictured above), a mini sweatshirt, and darling sweatpants with a kangaroo pocket. All made of merino wool, the color palette sets the collection apart with shades of navy, mustard yellow, plum, charcoal, and oatmeal. Not to mention, the natural anti-bacterial and moisture wicking properties make it especially kid-friendly!
