styling the bump – #2

It’s time for another edition of styling the bump! This chilly November morning has got me all wrapped up in layers so I thought I’d share just a few ideas for keeping the bump cozy in style.

My first fav is this great ruffled wool/cashmere wrap from Nordstrom. It comes in NINE different colors and again, is a piece that you will get lots of use from even after the bump is gone. Also from Nordstrom, I love this V-neck topper by Tarnish. It will look amazing over anything from denim to leggings to a stretchy pencil skirt!

If you live in a climate that requires a proper jacket to keep you warm in winter months, check out the outerwear collections from Target and Old Navy maternity. The styles and prices are great from both. My top picks are the wool peacoat in military green from Target and the grey cocoon coat from Old Navy.

I’ve mentioned vintage maternity from Miskabelly here before and today I found this great layering piece to recommend. It’s a over sized orange and yellow sweater vest… perfect for both over and under some of your other favorite pieces. Check them out often for new fabulous finds!

Now that outerwear is taken care of, don’t forget about shaping pieces to go under it all. This shaping tank from Blanqi helps alleviate baby weight and lift the belly smoothing though the hips, helping to secure your pants as well. Also – maternity Spanx are a must-have for all mamas-to-be!

stroller mom

With so many brands, models, and styles to choose from choosing a stroller can be a daunting task so here are a few things to help you get going on your decision.

1. Determine where and how you will use your stroller the most: Are you an urban mama that will be doing lots of in-city strolling? Do you need something that folds easily for travel and/or lots of trips in and out of the car? Are you an avid jogger or hiker? You’ll need something that does well on any terrain where you’ll be taking baby.

2. Once you have a couple of styles in mind, read lots of reviews! Some of the best testimony will be from moms who have actually tried the product. Also – don’t be afraid to try them out in-store. Make sure to touch, fold, detach, re-attach and play with all the elements of a stroller you are seriously considering.

3. Safety first – pay attention to any safety info, possible re-calls, and make sure you have a stroller and infant car-seat that work together.

4. Last (but certainly not least) find a style that you like! For many months this stroller will be a must-have accessory for you so make sure to pick something that not only will function the way you need it to, but is something that will compliment not only your lifestyle and personal style alike.

Here are a few of our favs:

For urban mamas, I love the Maxi-Cosi Foray (pictured above). It is great for being out and about in-city and the modular function allows you to use the frame with just the infant car seat if you want. Also – the handle has a telescoping option to adjust to your height.  The Bugaboo Bee stroller is another great option for urban mamas.

For active mamas (jogging, hiking, etc), try the BOB Revolution. It’s maneuverability is great, not to mention it folds up like a dream. This is also one of my favorite pics for mamas who need a car-friendly stroller. The Jaunt stroller from Safety 1st is also a fab option for those who are in and out of the car a lot. You can fold it up one-handed, the basket underneath is great for storing diaper bag or shopping bags, and the car seat combo is very easy to use.

For the jet-setting mama, try something like the UPPAbaby G-Luxe. It’s lightweight and folds easily and unlike many umbrella strollers, it has a full recline option. One downside – not much storage space in the basket but an attachable tote would solve that problem.

Happy strolling!

legwarmers we love

I don’t know why, but legwarmers for little ones have got to be one of the cutest things EVER! I have had some people ask what’s the point of putting leg warmers on babies; I think there are a couple of benefits: one, you can keep their little legs warm and still have super easy access for diaper changes. Two, a great way to protect little knees when they are crawling at light speed. And finally, they are just so stinkin’ cute!!! I love BabyLegs (one of the originals in the “industry”) not only for their great ideas but for the multitude of choices in style, color, pattern, etc. Oh – and did you know they have armwarmers too?!

One of my newest favs however are the adorable handmade legwarmers and hats from Knotty Tots (pictured above). You can find almost any color in their Etsy shop! Not to mention, I love the little signature flower in a contrasting color. Check out more from Knotty Tots here!

yoga, baby!

Can you imagine how adorable baby’s little chubby limbs would be in a yoga pose? I can! Parent/baby yoga classes have been popping up at yoga studios all over – many of them as a logical compliment to an existing prenatal yoga class.

Many benefits of prenatal yoga (including muscle tone, staying limber, strength, balance and circulation) also translate very well to a parent/baby class. Often these are aimed at parents with babies from 4 weeks to crawling, baby having constant contact with mom or dad with lots of time for interaction and affection! Not only is it a very special time for parent and baby to bond, it’s also a great way to help mom get back into pre-pregnancy shape. Although these classes are fabulous for your physical well-being, they are also a great place to meet other new parents and/or moms-to-be.

Most classes are perfectly appropriate for beginnners and as always, be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding physical activity when pregnant. Click here and here for additional great info about benefits of prenatal yoga!

nursery essentials – top 5

In a world where the baby industry is growing by leaps and bounds, where the lists of adorable must-haves seem to have no end, how do you begin weeding through them and figuring out whether each so-called “necessity” is actually a necessity? Well  here is a little head start to help with the nursery.

1. Crib – this is a must-have for any nursery no matter who you talk to! Although the style options are endless consider a few things when choosing a crib. First and foremost is safety. Read reviews on the crib(s) you’re interested in and check to see that there haven’t been any re-calls, look for the Juvenille Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) certification. Although it may be tempting to use a crib or bassinet that is a family heirloom they may not meet current safety standards so be sure to inspect them carefully.

2. Changing Table – although there are a variety of alternatives to serve this purpose, the botton line is you will definitely need something to change baby on! One option is the traditional changing table. Another option (I tend to love any piece that can grow with baby!) is a dresser able to accomodate rails and changing pad on the top. That way, when there aren’t any more diapers to change it will simply serve as a dresser in baby’s room. A few other interesting options are the wall-mounted changing table or a crib with attached table. Whatever you go with, make sure to have somewhere to keep extra diapers, wipes, etc like a hanging caddy if your changing area doesn’t have enough storage space.

3. Rocking Chair/Glider – There will be many a night when you have to get up in the wee hours to feed or soothe baby so be sure to have a comfy place to do so. When it’s 3am, the closer that place is to baby’s crib, the happier you’ll be! Traditional rockers are a great option but I also love the variety of gliders now – especially the ones that don’t look like it! One of my favs that I’ve found so far is this one to the left from Babies R Us.

4. Storage – Everything for baby seems too tiny to take up much space but surprise, it does! A few fab solutions I love are:

bins – great for toys and books, especially if you find fun colors or patterns to coordinate with baby’s room

hanging closet organizers – perfect for all of those adorable outfits, countless socks, and onesies you have

wall-mounted shelves – especially nice to keep more breakable pieces out of reach (frames, piggy bank, etc) and save on floor space

5. Baby Monitor – a must-have in order to give you peace of mind! This handy little device will allow you to get things done around the house and maybe even socialize while being able to keep the much needed ear (or eye) on baby while they are sleeping. Today hundreds of models are available from the simple to the simply everything! Lots of great reviews can be found online or in-store to help you decide which one fits your family’s needs.

Although the list can be endless, figure out what items are a must-have for your family and be willing to let go of the others. I always love things that can grow with baby from the colors in the room to a crib-turned-toddler bed. Keep it simple and keep it beautiful! Most importantly, it’s all about you and baby!

baby bedding we love

Right now I am LOVING all of the fabulous styles of baby bedding from Dwell Studios. A few of my favs are the Sparrow collection (pictured to the right), the Owl collection, and all of their fabulous organic bedding as well. I love the clean lines and graphic patterns using beautiful color, mixing of multiple patterns with like color palettes. A great idea if you didn’t want a completely matching set is to use a single piece from the line you love (like just the fitted cib sheet or just the bumper) and mix them with other elements you’ve found elsewhere or gotten as a gift (like a beautiful handmade quilt). Oh – and don’t miss these adorable mobiles seen here!

Also – did you know Dwell Studio does a line for Target? A great option if you love the style but want the look for less. This hippo collection is absolutely adorable!!! A few other noteworthy patterns include  Little Dots (very similar to one in their main line) and the Tulip collection. Don’t forget to take a look at the other fab accessories and even furniture from Dwell Studio both at Target and in their main line.

styling the bump

Looking fabulous is tough, to say the least, when the size and shape of your body is rapidly changing. I’ve witnessed the daily struggle as one of my always stylish girlfriends continues to try and find new, comfortable, and fashion-forward ways to dress her 6-month (and growing!) bump. So the million dollar question is – how do you dress during your pregnancy without breaking the bank? And – is it possible to find maternity that isn’t, well, maternity?

The short answer is YES! Get creative raiding your closet (and maybe even a girlfriend’s) for pieces you already own that you can adjust – with or without modifications – to fit the baby bump! Invest in a few key maternity pieces like denim, leggings, a versitile pair of black trousers, tights, a pencil skirt, and a couple of layering tanks or tees.

After you do that – start seeking out items that will look fab even post-pregnancy. Find unstructured, asymetirical drapey tops in fabrics that feel yummy to the touch. Embrace sillhouettes that both hug and enhance the bump (bias cut is good). Aside from the basics, try to stay away from strictly “maternity” pieces. Add accessories and scarves – the chunkier, the bolder, the better. Oh, and if you are comfortable in heels, by all means ROCK them… they lengthen legs like crazy! Take inspiration from celeb baby bumps that rule the red carpet and find ways to make it work for you. Just a hint: anything stretchy is usually really really good! It takes effort and a little creativity but in the end, looks that wow are more than worth it.
