a gray & white nursery

This week we have taken a look at how to put together nursery budgets as well as design boards ranging from $600 – $2000, showing that you can have fabulous design style at any price.

While realistically most of us will have a budget for any room we are designing or event we are planning, sometimes it is fun to stop looking at the price tag and simply put together a beautiful space. That said, we usually title these posts as “nursery inspiration” because it is meant to be exactly that, inspiration. Even if a piece or look you love well exceeds your budget, be inspired and take it as a challenge to create a similar style with less expensive elements.

In today’s room the drama doesn’t come from bright colors or bold patterns but from a room filled with white, lots of texture, and beautiful pieces of furniture. To be honest, it’s one of my favorites to date!

1. Waterfall Ruffle curtain $78 2. Ocean Minutiae Chandelier $1,200 3. Nurseryworks Storytime Rocker $750 4. Chevron Striped lucite tray from etsy $45 5. Mirrored dresser $1,298 6. Sheepskin Rug $259 7. Vintage 1909 Vogue Cover, framed $195 8. Oeuf Eco-friendly Sparrow crib $690 9. Oilo Modern Berries Crib Set $399 10. Black & White tutu from etsy $24.95

Just in case you were keeping track… today’s splurge-filled nursery rings in at just under $5,000.

Coming next week: another nursery for under $600 + lots of fashion for mama and the littles!!!

nursery inspiration: safari chic under $1000

Continuing this week’s features of nurseries on any budget, today’s design board is representing a $1000 nursery. The inspiration for this room was the beautiful ‘Tea Rose’ bedding from Gus & Max. I love this set for many reasons, one of which is that it includes pieces appropriate for transitioning to a toddler bed plus it is eco-friendly! It is also one of the pieces I chose to invest more in (although I was able to find it half price!) because it can still be used after baby grows out of the crib. The other piece that received a larger chunk of the budget was the chair as it will easily transition into another room in the house if needed.

1. Net Canopy* from IKEA $19.99 2. Boja pendant lamp $$59.99 3. 8×10 Elephant print from etsy $15 4. Woodside Block Print curtain from Urban Outfitters $38 5. gus & max ‘Tea Rose’ bedding set $292.99 6. Lilith Slipper Chair in Marigold $299.99 7. Agen Children’s Armchair $19.99 8. Storkcraft ‘Madison’ Convertable Crib & Changer Combo in Espresso $169.98

Grand Total: $915.93 leaving about $84 in the budget for additional items!

*Note: Net canopy is not safe to be used over the crib. Use it somewhere else in the room (ex. behind a chair or dresser) to help frame the piece.

planning your nursery: 3rd edition

photo from here.

This week in ‘planning your nursery’ it’s all about the money, baby. That’s right – the budget! In addition to discussing things to consider in putting together your budget, later this week will be featuring three design boards for nurseries with budgets ranging from $600 to $2000.

To view previous ‘planning your nursery’ posts see here and here.

You have the room picked out, taken measurements, started playing with all kinds of ideas as far as style and color – maybe even made a few decisions! The next (very important) thing to do before you head out to shop for the goods is to put together a budget for the room.

Consider each piece you will need to buy and choose a budget for each. Think about pieces you might want to invest more in (for example a dresser that can grow into the teenage years or a chair that could be re-purposed for another room in the house later). Once you have a budget for each piece, add about 20 – 30% for decor, combine your totals and you are set to start shopping!

For example:

Crib: $250 – $300

Dresser/Changer: $250

Chair/Rocker: $400 – $450

Crib Bedding: $200 – $250

Decor etc. : $250

Total Budget: $1500

However you compile your budget, allow a little room for the unexpected. There are always little additions that you can’t plan for. Plus – it’s a great idea to add pieces of furniture for the nursery to your registry. They are often a favorite for group gifts and many places give you a discount on remaining items that you would like to purchase yourself.

Coming later today: A Bright and Modern Nursery under $600!!!

and the award goes to…

We all love awards season, not only for the fabulous red carpet moments but also for the fashion flaws, faux pas, and flat out disasters!

Thankfully, I think most of Hollywood’s elite got it right last night and we are excited to share some picks for Oscar Fashion. Although jewel tones ruled the red carpet at previous awards shows this season, last night had our stars wearing white (and it’s other fair-hued counterparts). Although there were a few mis-steps (not a fan of Nicole Kidman’s Dior number, although we generally love her) most did it right in looks that were everything from white hot to soft and romantic with lace trim and lots of tulle! (James Franco in Gucci, Anne Hathaway in Givenchy Haute Couture).

One star who nearly always knocks us out with her red carpet style is Halle Berry and she did not dissappoint in this lovely Marchesa number, Neil Lane jewels. With her fair skin, this could have been a disaster but Mandy Moore pleasantly surprised wearing a beautiful Monique Lhullier gown and Harry Winston jewels. Although Gwyneth Paltrow always looks gorgeous, we do wish she would have chosen something a little more figure flattering than this Calvin Klein Collection piece (Louis Vuitton jewels).

Hailee Steinfeld looked sweet and age-appropriate (she’s only 14!) in another stunning red-carpet gown from Marchesa. The shoes (Ferragamo) aren’t my favorites but we’ll give her a pass. Melissa Leo who took an award home last night rocked this season’s lace trend perfectly (can you really ‘rock’ lace?) in this beautiful piece by Marc Bouwer. Last but certainly not least, who more appropriate to close this show than Chanel? Michelle Williams looked polished and chic in Chanel Haute Couture and Harry Winston jewels, much more awards show appropriate than her Golden Globes choice.

Although white certainly ruled the night, pops of purple made a statement as well on none other than Best Actress winner (and mama-to-be) Natalie Portman!

Very appropriate that Natalie Portman accepted her award in Rodarte (as they designed the costumes for Black Swan) although I have to say her sweet Viktor & Rolf number from the Globes may have outshined this one. Also with unique takes on this usually regal hue, Scarlett Johanssen in Dolce & Gabbana (with Jeremy Renner in YSL) and my absolute favorite gown of the night, Mila Kunis in Elie Saab Couture with Neil Lane jewels.
