elf on the shelf {holiday magic}

If you haven’t heard the charming story of the “Elf on the Shelf”, you are missing out! It is the most darling holiday tradition that not only goes hand in hand with all the magic of the holidays but also is a wonderful tool to motivate the little ones to mind their manners even more than usual.

How do these charming little elves get into their new homes you may ask? Well it begins when Santa sends his elves out to ‘Elf Adoption Centers’ where the elves will patiently hibernate until their new family reads the story and gives them a name. Once named, the elf receives their Christmas magic and becomes a part of that family for life.

These elves are the eyes and ears of Santa and cannot be touched or else they lose their magic. Each night, the elf used their magic powers to fly back to the North Pole & check in with Santa telling stories about their families, playing with the reindeer and snacking on Mrs. Claus’ cookies!

Since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot every day. A few of their favorite hiding places? The freezer (chilly like the North Pole!), hanging from a chandelier, or high up on a bookshelf where they can observe all the happenings of the day.

Interested in adopting an Elf on the Shelf for your family? Just a couple places you can find them include Nordstrom & Amazon.com! Read more about the story & The Elf on the Shelf tradition here.

10 fabulous baby gifts

With the holidays fast approaching it’s time to start thinking about gifts for those on your list. Today we’re sharing 10 fabulous gifts, some for baby and some for a new mama or mama-to-be!

1. sophie giraffe – Born in France in 1961, Sophie has a long history of helping teething babies. Derived from natural rubber and food paint, she is safe to chew with and easy shape for babies to grasp. Find it here

2. burt’s bees – Although there are a lot of fabulous baby bath products on the market right now, Burt’s Bees is a hands-down favorite in my book! This ‘starter kit’ is a great way for mom & dad to test out smaller sizes of the products and decide which ones they love. Includes: Nourishing Lotion, Shampoo & Wash, Nourishing Oil, Diaper Ointment & Buttermilk soap. Find it here.

3. goodnight moon – every shower I attend I try to include at least one of my favorite children’s books and Goodnight Moon is always a crowd pleaser! Pick out some of your favorites to help get baby’s library started early. Find it here

4. aden + anais swaddling blankets – any new mama will tell you that swaddling blankets are an absolutle must-have. These bamboo blankets from aden + anais not only fit the bill as far as function is concerned (large for easy wrapping, breathable, multi-purpose) but they are just so darn cute too! Available in many patterns/colors. Find it here.

5. cute burp cloths – while it’s true you need a stockpile of simply functional burp cloths, it’s really nice to have a few that are extra cute, especially when you are out and about. Swaddle Designs makes some of my favorites but you can also find lots of sweet handmade options on etsy!

6. layette basics – let’s face it, you’ll find it necessary for baby to have multiple costume changes each day so it is important to have a nice stockpile of basic layette pieces to cover your bases. One of my new favs are Giggle’s ‘Layette Better Basics’, all made from organic & fair trade egyptian cotton. Available in ivory, pink, or blue. Also be sure to check out the Little Peanut collection from Peek!

7. family heirlooms – Not only do they hold some sentimental value, but using family heirlooms (if you like them of course) is a great way to save a little money in your nursery budget. Plus – the pieces mean more when you have a story about them to share! Like the crib but don’t have one in your family? Get the look new here!

8. stock the kitchen – any family with a brand new little one will tell you that things like cooking and shopping tend to take a bit of a backseat, especially in the first few weeks home. With that in mind, a fabulous gift is to stock the fridge/kitchen for the family of a newborn. Focus on grab & go or easily prepared items to make it all the more convenient!

9. grown up gifts – The other day I was reading through a list of favorite baby gifts shared by new moms and one that stood out was “a bottle of wine & an energy drink”. Humerous, yes but also a nice little indulgence for mama! Add a few gourmet cheeses, meats, & crackers and it can also serve as a sweet little stay-at-home date for the new parents.

10. spa or salon treatments – Every girl needs to be pampered, especially when she’s a new mama. Help her relax with a massage & nail treatment. Help her feel like her usual beautiful self with a cut & color!

Hope you enjoyed our list of fabulous gift ideas! Have a few of your own to share? We’d love to hear from you!

{real rooms} palm springs-inspired nursery

This amazing Palm Springs-inspired nursery was featured on ohdeedoh the other day and although it proved to be surprisingly controversial in the comments shared I have to say I think it’s a stroke of genius! Not only are the design choices inspiring, but I personally would have loved a room like this as a child. Admittedly not to everyone’s taste, it is imaginative & refreshing, an exciting choice and a room that most certainly would transition from baby to childhood and beyond.

Enjoy! And… if you want your own copy of this oversized print, check it out here.

On a personal note, we’re headed to Palm Springs this weekend for an amazing celebration of my grandfather’s life. It’s a place that is near and dear to my heart and any room inspired by somewhere I love so much is bound to strike the right chord with me.
